Description
Best of the 80's, Vol. 1 brings together ten of the decade's most recognizable songs in solo piano form, spanning rock anthems, pop hits, and ballads from Journey, Toto, Whitney Houston, ABBA, and more.
The more energetic tracks — Don't Stop Believin', Eye of the Tiger, and I Wanna Dance with Somebody — were built on big guitar riffs and synth hooks in their originals, and the piano arrangements keep those melodies moving at a steady, even pace. Take On Me and The Final Countdown are the most synth-driven songs in the set, and both translate surprisingly well to the keys, their main hooks recognizable from the first few notes.
Africa and The Winner Takes It All bring the album's more measured, romantic side to the fore, with slower harmonic movement that gives each song a little more room. (I've Had) The Time of My Life and I'm So Excited carry some of the most familiar hooks in the collection, while Fame closes things out with a slightly more rhythmic feel than the tracks that surround it.
Across all ten songs the approach stays clean and consistent, with the melody kept front and center throughout. For anyone who grew up with these songs — or is coming to them for the first time — this is an album that proves how well a great 80s hook holds up on a single instrument.
