Smells Like Teen Spirit and Losing My Religion sit at one end of the spectrum, both guitar-driven songs that lose their distortion and reverb entirely in piano form, leaving just the chord progressions and melodic lines behind. ...Baby One More Time, Believe, and Barbie Girl come from the decade's pop side, and all three carry their hooks cleanly on a single instrument — melodies that were built to stick regardless of what's playing underneath them.
Still D.R.E. is one of the more interesting translations in the set, its iconic piano riff, already so central to the original, that the solo piano version changes very little about how the song sounds. Bitter Sweet Symphony and Under the Bridge sit closer to ballad territory, both moving at a slower pace with enough harmonic space to work naturally without their original production. No Scrubs, All That She Wants, and All Star keep the middle of the set moving, their upbeat tempos handled with steady, even-paced arrangements.
What makes this collection worth a listen is the sheer range of the track list—thirteen songs that would never share a stage, brought together by nothing but a piano.
