Johannes Brahms was born on May 7, 1833, in Hamburg, Germany, and became one of the towering figures of the Romantic era — a composer whose music combined rigorous Classical architecture with a deep vein of lyrical warmth and emotional intensity. His encounter with Hungarian Romani music came early, through his friendship and touring partnership with the violinist Eduard Reményi in the early 1850s, and the rhythmic vitality and melodic character of that tradition left a permanent mark on his musical imagination. The Hungarian Dances, first published for piano four hands in 1869 and later arranged for solo piano, represent his most direct and freely inventive engagement with that influence.

The twenty-one dances draw on Hungarian and Romani folk melodies that Brahms heard, absorbed, and freely elaborated rather than composed outright — a distinction he was careful to acknowledge. What he brought to the material was his own instinct for structure, harmonic color, and dramatic contrast, and the results are among the most immediately appealing and freely inventive works he ever produced.
