Frédéric Chopin was born on March 1, 1810, in the Duchy of Warsaw, and became one of the most celebrated and influential composers in the history of piano music. Unlike many of his Romantic contemporaries, he wrote almost exclusively for the piano, developing a style of extraordinary intimacy and refinement that drew on his Polish heritage, his deep admiration for Bach, and an innate gift for melody that has rarely been equaled. His music demands not only considerable technical command but a particular sensitivity of touch and phrasing, and his best works occupy a unique expressive territory — at once deeply personal and universally felt.

The 24 Preludes, Op. 28, were composed between 1835 and 1839, with the final pieces completed during a difficult winter Chopin spent on the island of Majorca with the writer George Sand. The trip, intended as a restorative retreat, proved grueling — the weather was harsh, accommodations were poor, and Chopin's tuberculosis worsened considerably during the stay. Modeled loosely on Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, the Preludes move through all twenty-four major and minor keys in a cycle of fifths, yet each piece is entirely self-contained — some lasting barely a minute, others extending into more expansive emotional territory. The brooding stillness of No. 4 in E Minor and the hymn-like solemnity of No. 20 in C Minor stand in vivid contrast to the mercurial brilliance of No. 16 in B-Flat Minor and the driving urgency of No. 24 in D Minor, while the celebrated Raindrop Prelude, No. 15 in D-Flat Major, builds from a gently rocking opening into something altogether darker before returning quietly to where it began.

What unifies the collection is not programmatic content but an intensity of focus and an economy of means that gives each prelude the quality of a perfectly formed thought. Chopin himself resisted the implication that the pieces were merely preparatory or introductory — they are complete in themselves, each one a distillation of a single expressive idea pursued with absolute concentration. Together they represent one of the most ambitious and fully realized collections in the piano repertoire, a work that continues to reward both performers and listeners with seemingly inexhaustible depth.
