Description

Frédéric Chopin was born on March 1, 1810, in the Duchy of Warsaw, and became one of the most celebrated and influential composers in the history of piano music. Writing almost exclusively for the piano, he developed a style of extraordinary intimacy and refinement — one built on singing melodic lines, richly decorated ornamentation, and a harmonic language of unusual depth and color. More than almost any other composer, Chopin understood the piano as an instrument capable of sustaining a vocal, lyrical quality, and nowhere is that understanding more fully realized than in the Nocturnes.

The Nocturne as a form was established by the Irish composer John Field, whose own nocturnes — quiet, song-like pieces built on a simple accompaniment pattern in the left hand — provided Chopin with both a model and a point of departure. Chopin absorbed Field's template and transformed it into something far more harmonically and emotionally complex. The Op. 9 Nocturnes, published in 1833, represent his earliest mature contribution to the form. The first, in B-Flat Minor, opens with a long, arching melody of great tenderness over a gently rocking bass, while the second in E-Flat Major — perhaps the most universally recognized of all the Nocturnes — distills the form to its purest and most elegant expression. The third in B Major is the most restless and extended of the set, its Allegretto middle section introducing a turbulence that the opening calm only gradually reclaims.

The Op. 15 and Op. 27 Nocturnes deepen and expand the emotional range of the form considerably. The Op. 15 No. 1 in F Major moves from a gentle Andante cantabile opening into a dramatic, storm-like middle section before returning to its initial serenity, while the Op. 15 No. 2 in F-Sharp Major is among the most intimate and inward of all the Nocturnes, its melody unfolding with a quiet simplicity that belies its harmonic sophistication. The Op. 27 pair represents perhaps the highest point of this selection — No. 1 in C-Sharp Minor is one of Chopin's most harmonically daring pieces, its brooding opening giving way to a passionate climax of considerable power, while No. 2 in D-Flat Major is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful pieces he ever wrote, its two intertwining melodic lines moving together with a tenderness and grace that seems to transcend the instrument entirely.
