The Op. 9 Nocturnes, published in 1833, represent his earliest mature contribution to the form. The Op. 15 No. 1 in F Major moves from a gentle Andante cantabile opening into a dramatic, storm-like middle section before returning to its initial serenity, while the Op. 15 No. 2 in F-Sharp Major is among the most intimate and inward of all the Nocturnes, its melody unfolding with a quiet simplicity that belies its harmonic sophistication.
