Description
Twelve John Mayer songs make up this solo piano collection, spanning his run from early 2000s pop-rock through to the more blues-influenced material that followed.
Gravity and Slow Dancing in a Burning Room are rooted in blues guitar phrasing, and the piano arrangements take a different approach to that material, translating the bent notes and sustained guitar lines into a smoother, more even melodic shape. Your Body Is a Wonderland and Daughters are among the more straightforward entries, both built on simple chord progressions that carry cleanly to a single instrument without much adjustment. Free Fallin', a cover originally written by Tom Petty, sits a little apart from the rest of the tracklist in terms of origin, though its melody and structure fit comfortably within the same easy-listening approach as the surrounding songs.
Waiting on the World to Change and No Such Thing are the most upbeat tracks here, and both are brought down to a steadier, more measured pace in piano form. Half of My Heart and Say anchor the slower end of the collection, both ballads that ask little of the arrangement beyond letting the melody carry through at its own pace.
Heartbreak Warfare and Dreaming With a Broken Heart close out the set, both mid-tempo tracks handled with the same consistent, unhurried touch that runs through the rest of the album.
