Description
Nobuo Uematsu's score for Final Fantasy VII is one of the most celebrated in video game history, and this fourteen-track collection draws from across it — from the opening Prelude through to One-Winged Angel at the close. The arrangements sit at an intermediate to advanced level of technical difficulty, with the battle themes — Let the Battles Begin!, JENOVA, and One-Winged Angel — representing the most technically demanding material in the set, each requiring a significant amount from the performer in terms of pace and dynamic range.
Tifa's Theme, Aerith's Theme, and The Main Theme of Final Fantasy VII anchor the slower, more melodic end of the track list, all three pieces built on long, arching melodic lines that carry well on a single instrument. Gold Saucer and Electric de Chocobo bring a lighter, more playful character to the middle of the album, their upbeat tempos and syncopated rhythms sitting in contrast to the more serious pieces around them.
Cosmo Canyon and Descendent of Shinobi occupy the more rhythmically driven middle ground, both pieces that compensate for their original percussive elements through parallel left-hand movement and octave-based phrasing. Rufus' Welcome Ceremony and On Our Way are among the more straightforward entries, both shorter and less technically demanding than the battle themes that bookend the collection. Across all fourteen tracks, the arrangements stay close to Uematsu's original compositions while making room for select moments where the piano writing takes on a character of its own.
