Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born on May 7, 1840, in Votkinsk, Russia, and became the most internationally celebrated Russian composer of the nineteenth century. His music is distinguished by an exceptional gift for melody, a mastery of large-scale dramatic structure, and an emotional directness that has made his major works among the most performed and beloved in the orchestral repertoire. The Sixth Symphony, completed in 1893 just days before his death, is widely regarded as his most personal and searching work — a piece he himself considered his finest and to which he gave the subtitle "Pathétique," suggesting a quality of deep feeling and emotional sincerity rather than mere sentimentality.

The symphony unfolds across four movements of striking contrast and cumulative emotional power. The opening Adagio moves from a dark, brooding introduction into a passionate and turbulent main body before subsiding into a mood of quiet exhaustion.
